What It Is

Cypress leaf is the tender branch and leaf of the cypress tree (Platycladus orientalis). In the Dong ethnic tradition, elders call it "the herb for hair." It grows in sunny mountain slopes and even between rocks — resilient, evergreen, and undaunted by harsh conditions.

In traditional Chinese medicine, cypress leaf has been used for over a thousand years. It was first recorded in the ancient Shennong Ben Cao Jing (Divine Farmer‘s Materia Medica) as a top-grade herb. The Eastern Jin physician Ge Hong documented its first known formula for treating hair loss. Later, in the Compendium of Materia Medica, Li Shizhen summarized its effects: "Soaked in oil, it grows hair. Burned to extract, it darkens hair. Mixed with lard, it nourishes hair to blackness."

How It Works

Cypress leaf has a bitter, astringent taste and a slightly cold nature. In traditional understanding, “hair is the surplus of blood.” Early graying and hair loss in younger people are often attributed to internal heat disturbing the blood. Cypress leaf clears this heat — once the heat is resolved, the hair settles.

Modern science now confirms this ancient knowledge:

① Promotes Hair Growth
Flavonoids in cypress leaf stimulate dermal papilla cells, helping dormant hair follicles reactivate. Studies have shown that cypress leaf extract can regulate the follicle microenvironment and encourage the growth phase to begin.

② Regulates Oil, Fights Bacteria, Reduces Inflammation
Flavonoids help curb sebum production, reducing excess scalp oil. The herb also has anti‑inflammatory properties that ease follicle irritation and inhibit dandruff‑causing bacteria.

③ Improves Scalp Microcirculation
It promotes local blood flow, enhancing follicle metabolism and delivering more nutrients to the hair root.

What It Does

  • Soothes the scalp – cools heat, relieves itching and redness
  • Controls oil and reduces flakiness – balances sebum, improves scalp condition
  • Strengthens hair roots – helps address heat‑related hair loss and supports follicle recovery
  • Nourishes for darker, healthier hair – helps reduce premature graying and restore natural lustre

Rooted in History, Backed by Science

Cypress leaf‘s efficacy in promoting hair growth and restoring colour has been validated for over a thousand years. The Compendium of Materia Medica records: "Soaked in oil, it grows hair; burned to extract, it darkens hair." Modern pharmacopoeia (Chinese Pharmacopoeia) lists its official functions as: cooling blood to stop bleeding, transforming phlegm to relieve cough, and promoting hair growth and darkening — specifically indicated for heat‑related hair loss and premature greying.

Research confirms that cypress leaf extract regulates the follicle microenvironment, activates multiple signalling pathways to support anagen (growth phase) initiation, and demonstrates clear bioactivity in combating oxidative stress, alleviating tissue inflammation, and stimulating follicle development.

Evergreen through the seasons. A thousand years of wisdom. Now, it protects your hair.
